Visit a National Park

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde offers an unparalleled opportunity to see and experience a unique cultural and physical landscape, representing more than 700 years of history. From approximately A.D. 600 through A.D. 1300 people lived and flourished in communities throughout the area, eventually building elaborate stone villages in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. The cliff dwellings represent the last 75 to 100 years of occupation at Mesa Verde. In the late 1200s within the span of one or two generations, they left their homes and moved away.

After a thrilling day visiting these magnificent sites you can enjoy a gourmet dinner in Durango and then sink into a featherbed with freshly ironed sheets, and cool mountain air stirring through your own private cottage at the Apple Orchard Inn

Access to Rocky Mountain National Park through Estes Park offers a choice of elegant and romantic lodging at Romantic RiverSong or Taharaa Mountain Lodge.

In the park, sixty peaks rising above 12,000 feet challenge intrepid hikers and climbers. Anyone visiting between Memorial Day and late autumn can see many of these peaks eye-to-eye by driving over Trail Ridge Road. Topping out at 12,183 feet, this is the highest, continuous, paved road in the United States.

Railroad Buff

The Cheyenne Canon Inn (Colorado Springs) is convenient to the Cog Rail Way on Pikes Peak. The world's highest cog train takes families to the 14,110 foot summit of America's Mountain, Pikes Peak, Colorado.

Apple Orchard Inn (Durango) and The Wyman (Silverton) are located at the respective terminuses of the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The line was constructed in 1882 to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious. This historic train has been in continuous operation for 125 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock.

Gourmet

Taste of Vail, August 17-20, features an abundance of food and wine tasting. Savory Inn and Cooking School of Vail, a beautiful rustic log inn on Gore Creek, regularly offers afternoon and evening classes.

In Aspen, the Saturday market fills downtown streets near City Hall with Colorado-grown produce, arts and crafts, meats and cheeses, fresh-baked breads and pastries. Stay at the perfectly located Hotel Lenado nearby.

Golfing

Consider the breathtaking Rio Grand Golf Club, ranked 6th in the Nation by Golf Digest, minutes from the Apple Dumpling Inn (Southfork); or walk out the back door of the Cattail Inn (Loveland) and step on to the 7th tee of the Cattail Creek Golf Course (see photo); Fairway Pines is ranked in the top 50 resort courses in America by golf Digest and only 30 minutes from the St. Elmo (Ouray).
